Apple’s September event on the 7th saw Apple officially reveal 2022’s line-up: the much awaited iPhone 14 models, new Apple Watch Series 8 models, and updated AirPods Pro. Here's a little guided tour below straight from the horses mouth.
So, what's different about the iPhone 14?
As you’re no doubt aware, in this epic new iPhone release Apple is offering 2 “base” models - the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, along with two “Pro” models - iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Unlike with its predecessor, there is no Mini me version this time.
At first peek the iPhone 14 looks very similar to the iPhone 13 Pro models with their squared off edges and overall sleek design, but as we all know looks can be deceiving. This latest release has enough enticing new features and upgrades to pique our interest. As always, we aim to educate and simplify for you, our loyal reader, so read on for our simple guide to which iPhone 14 variant is best for you.
A New Standard - iPhone 14
This 6.1”sized model, like its previous iteration, once again boasts a Super Retina XDR display- but claims to be the brightest display for an iPhone, ever.
The A15 Bionic Chip in the standard models has a 5-core GPU (one-upping the 4-core in the iPhone 13).
One of the most exciting additions in this release are the safety features. Two new iPhone 14 safety features which could prove lifesaving in emergencies. The direct to satellite communications for SOS situations, and Crash Detection. Your location can now be pinged to friends, family or emergency services if you get into an accident, or even if there’s no phone reception!!! This will no doubt save precious lives and give us all some piece of mind next time we head out for that road trip.
Speaking of life, the battery life in this standard model is also pretty epic- Apple claims with normal use it lasts up to 20 hours without needing to be charged. The dual 12MP Ultra-wide camera system will allow you to take crystal clear detailed photos even in low light situations. An exciting brand new addition is Action Mode, promising to capture steadier video in usually shaky situations. So maybe you can list the GoPro on Marketplace and shake things up with your new iPhone 14 camera instead.
Other things we like - the iPhone 14 design is durable and water resistant, with a Ceramic Shield front which claims to be tougher than any smartphone glass. It has a glass back for wireless charging and a lightweight aluminium frame.

Bigger is (Sometimes) Better - iPhone 14 Plus
The Plus version is basically the bigger brother of the standard iPhone 14, with a larger screen measuring 6.7”. It has the same dual camera and A15 Bionic Chip for speed and efficient processing. One impressive difference that we got excited about is the battery life being longer - with Apple claiming up to a whopping 26 hours of battery in normal usage for this model. Bingeing YouTube all day on a rainy day without having to get up and charge your phone? Yes please!
For: Those that want a large screen, without stepping up to (or paying for) the additional Max features.

For Profesh Photos - iPhone 14 Pro
The Pro model shares the same 6.1”screen size as the Standard model. The most obvious step up for both Pro models are the enhanced photographic capabilities, massively upgraded to let in more light and take crisper and insanely clear photos with 4x the resolution in ProRAW. The triple rear camera boasts a 48MP main camera, also with ultra-wide capabilities.
Selfie-lovers rejoice - the TrueDepth front camera with autofocus and a larger aperture, results in sharper and more colourful close-ups. For the budding filmmakers out there, Cinematic mode will automatically shift focus to the key subjects in a scene, and the recording rate is 4K at 24 fps - as fast as what the professionals use to film movies.
We feel the Pro model has really stepped it up a notch - actually, it has ditched the “notch” altogether and added an additional something Apple is calling “Dynamic Island” (source: Apple event recap — iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8, new AirPods Pro and more | Tom's Guide (tomsguide.com). According to The Verge, this handy little widget that appears as a black contextual box at the top of the screen allows you to multitask without leaving the app that you’re already in. For example, you can change your music without having to get out of the text message you’re writing and back in again. Game changer.
The pro models have also been upgraded with Apple’s latest A16 Bionic Chip with 5-core GPU, for extremely fast CPU performance and improved image signal processing. We can hear all you multi-tab multi-taskers rejoicing! The battery life of this model is up to 23 hours in normal use.
Another new addition to the Pro models (though the Android users amongst us have been familiar with this for years) is the Always-On screen. Meaning the screen is always “glanceable”, so you don’t have to press a button to see alerts or messages on the home screen. We give this a big thumbs up and feel it’s a welcome addition to the Apple arsenal (nothing worse than when you’re eating a burger and you get a text alert but it disappears too quick- amiright!?).
