The iPhone 12 Buyer's Guide

smartphonesshop.com.au - Remember the days when a flagship release would consist of only one device or even two? Well, those days are truly gone. As we’ve seen with Samsung and Apple, we’ve got Pro, Ultra and Pro Max variants of every yearly release. Once again, Apple has released Pro, Pro Max and even Mini versions of its iPhone 12 which will leave many scratching their heads over which type to purchase. While the most dedicated fans will immediately take the most expensive option, how about the rest of us? Let’s take a look at how these models differ and which one is best for you, whether you like things mini, are a professional or want to take it to the max.

iPhone 12

The Original And The Best

If you’re looking for a simple upgrade to your ageing iPhone 11 or worse yet, iPhone X, you’ll find the iPhone 12 right up your alley. There’s a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display as part of the package here, with a beautiful design consisting of a Glass back, aluminium and a Ceramic Shield front according to Apple, which should prove extremely handy for those clumsy drops you thought would never happen. An eye-popping 2532 by 1170 pixel resolution at 460 PPI awaits you bundled with mind-blowing HDR which goes up to 1200 nits, ensuring your images and videos are vivid enough to make your eyes forget they’re on a screen. The budding film producer within you will certainly go crazy over the implementation of 4K HDR Dolby Vision, making all your exploits look like they belong in the latest Hollywood blockbuster. While limited to 30 frames per second according to MacRumors, it’s unlike anything you’ve seen on a smartphone. It doesn’t just end there, as the iPhone 12’s Night Mode will also allow you to take bright and brilliant images even when the environmental lighting isn’t on your side, with 12MP Ultrawide lenses sweetening the deal. The iPhone 12’s A14 Bionic chip alongside 4GB of RAM according to MacRumors makes multitasking a breeze with the chip delivering lightning-fast performance (pardon the pun) according to this test by EverythingApplePro EAP. Let’s just say you’ll find the iPhone 12 to be a more than worthy upgrade to your iPhone 11 or under.

Mini-Me

Do you miss the smaller sizes of the iPhone 4 and 5? Hate the fact that most smartphones are getting bigger? Do you want the Apple of yesterday combined with the Apple of today in one miniature package? Apple understands how you feel, which is why they’ve made a Mini variant of the iPhone 12. It delivers literally everything the iPhone 12 specialises in, with 4K HDR Dolby Vision, a monstrous A14 Bionic chip and Night Mode for beautiful selfies in the dark. According to Apple, you’ll still be treated to the gorgeous Super Retina XDR display and although there’s a slightly reduced resolution of 2340 by 1080, you get a higher pixel density at 476 PPI on a 5.4-inch display. It’s small, but it packs a big punch and is the smallest 5G phone as Apple likes to refer to it as. Lovers of power and nostalgia will find the iPhone 12 Mini the perfect option as it’s mini in size, but definitely not mini in features!

For: Nostalgia addicts who treasure the iPhone 4/5 and hate large smartphone screens.

Available in: Black, White, , Green, Blue.

iPhone 12 Mini

For The Professional

Those of you who take the film producer fantasy seriously will find the iPhone 12 Pro an essential purchase. The first improvement that’s evident over the 12 and Mini variants is the third camera, a Telephoto lens that will allow you to accurately capture images in the distance alongside 4K HDR Dolby Vision available at a silky smooth sixty frames per second. Apple has also added some improvements in the design department, with a textured matt glass back and a stainless steel design. There’s the same 6.1-inch screen size as the iPhone 12, but this time it’s much more brighter and vivid. The included LiDAR scanner also makes Night Mode images and AR capabilities visibly superior to the iPhone 12. MacRumors has stated that the iPhone 12 Pro will come bundled with a gigantic 6GB of RAM, which should please the most ardent of multitaskers.

For: Those who spend too much time taking images and videos.

Available in: Silver, Graphite, Gold, Pacific Blue.

Storage: 128GB and 256GB and 512GB.

Our Pick: $92.19 total per month with Vodafone over 36 months. Unlimited data at 100GB max speed and unlimited calls/texts, 128GB storage. Available at our stores.

iPhone 12 Pro

Take It To The Max

If you’re a diehard Apple enthusiast, you won’t need any convincing to upgrade to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but for those of us who are still undecided, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is certainly worth its name and price. According to Apple, you’ll be treated to a gigantic 6.7-inch screen, making it the biggest iPhone ever released. There are all the features of the iPhone 12 Pro included alongside significant additions to the cameras, as reported by The Verge including a larger sensor for the camera combined with a faster performing lens. Those of you who are terrible at taking images will appreciate the increased focus (we love puns) on image stabilization here, with a new sensor-shift system made to emulate DSLR cameras allowing you to perfect your images like a professional photographer. Top that off with an increased 65mm Telephoto lens, and we won’t be surprised if you end up in Hollywood.

For: Fanboys and those who really enjoy making movies alongside those who just need to have the best variant.

Available in: Silver, Graphite, Gold, Pacific Blue.

Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB.

Release Date: Pre-order on 7/11/2020, releases on 13/11/2020. Available at our stores.
