Another year, another Galaxy Unpacked, except rather than noting it down we’ll be folding and flipping it. Yes, we won’t be graced by a Galaxy Note21 this year but in its place stands the slick Galaxy Z Fold3. We’ve also got the Galaxy Z Flip3 alongside new Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Watch 4/Classic as well. Either way, the future of Samsung is certainly taking a very interesting turn indeed and it does seem that the future of smartphones may be filled with folding and flipping. Read on and see what the future holds plus check out a recap of the event below!
Folding & Flipping
Foldables
Perhaps the most interesting reveal of this year’s Unpacked event was the Galaxy Z Fold3. It’s no surprise that Samsung wants the Galaxy Z Fold3 to be the Note’s successor, or at least wants to give it the spotlight this year. Besides, the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s S-Pen compatibility was the biggest sign to note (see what we did there?) that the Note Series was in trouble. Moving on, it looks like we’re going to have a great time with the Galaxy Z Fold3. The specs and features are quite interesting to say the least plus the design is certainly mesmerizing. Tom’s Guide has stated that the Galaxy Z Fold3 has a 6.2-inch OLED cover display alongside a 7.6-inch main screen when unfolded. We’ll also be treated to a silky smooth 120Hz refresh rate with S-Pen Capabilities. The dual screens are really a game changer here making multitasking more efficient than ever before and with more apps offering native support, it looks like the foldable phone trend is truly taking off. Also for those of you wondering how the cameras fare, Samsung has stated that the Z Fold3 will include a 10MP Selfie Camera, a triple Rear Camera with two 12MP Ultra Wide Cameras, a 12MP Telephoto Camera and last but not least, a 4MP Under Display Camera for the Main Screen. Top that off with a powerful Snapdragon 888 chip and a beastly 12GB of RAM, the Galaxy Z Fold3 is pretty much the best parts of a laptop and a smartphone in one convenient package.
Flipped Off
The Z Fold isn’t the only device with a sequel. To keep in line with the “3” naming Series the Z Flip2 has been renamed the Z Flip3 and delivers exactly what its predecessor does but more beautifully and efficiently. GSMArena has provided an in-depth look at this gorgeous device and we’re in for a flipping treat. A 120Hz screen awaits on an eye-popping 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen when flipped open. They have also stated that the Z Flip3 utilises the same powerful Snapdragon 888 chip as the Z Fold3 alongside 8GB of Ram. To put it in simpler terms you can expect powerful lag-free performance on your futuristic device. The snap-happy of you can expect a 10MP Selfie Camera alongside a 12MP Wide and Ultra-Wide Camera on the back. The flip phone from the 90’s has made a comeback and it’s looking better than ever.
Check Out My Buds
It wasn’t just foldables and flippables announced at Galaxy Unpacked this year, as Samsung have revealed their take on auditory pleasure will once again make our playlists sound better than ever with the new Galaxy Buds2. According to Samsung, there'll be two microphones to detect ambient sound while Active Noise Cancelling can block out pesky unwanted sounds by up to 98%, so nothing can get in the way of enjoying your favourite song or podcast. There are also six Equalizer settings so whether you’re jamming to Body or Breaking Me, you’ll find a setting that makes them sound best and to top it all off, a generous five hours of battery life if you’ve got Active Noise Cancelling Enabled, or 8 hours if it’s disabled. We’re now anticipating how Apple plans to respond with their inevitable AirPods refresh!
Watch This Space
The hotly rumoured Galaxy Watch4 & Galaxy Watch4 Classic were also finally revealed at the latest Galaxy Unpacked, and we couldn’t be happier. The Verge has spoken quite positively about the Galaxy Watch 4/Classic after a hands-on, describing them as the best smartwatches they’ve ever used with a Samsung smartphone! What’s particularly noteworthy (pun somewhat intended) is that both watches utilise Google’s Wear OS 3, combined with the Samsung apps we’ve come to know and rely on, which includes Bixby rather than the Google Assistant. The main difference between both variants is that the standard Galaxy Watch4 includes a touch-sensitive area around the screen to scroll through apps while the Classic version includes a physical bezel. The Verge has also stated that Samsung has added a Bioelectric Impedance Sensor or in other words a method to measure body fat which should certainly come in handy for the fitness freaks out there. All we can say is that Samsung users are really in for a treat with the Galaxy Watch4/Classic.
This year’s Galaxy Unpacked has shown us what Samsung sees as the future for its smartphones. It truly is the year for the Fold Series to take the spotlight, and for more of us to sit up and be amazed by the Z Flip. Who knows whether we’ll be folding our devices one day like our laptops, but either way the future looks interesting indeed.
