Welcome to the Smart Phones blog! We’ve been out of commission for about 2 years now but it’s time we (I) returned to writing. And what better time than tech-tober? It has been a wild month for smartphone releases, so let’s get to the most important one; the Google Pixel 3. I’m going to try and explain this in as much detail as I can for the tech-savvy people out there, but I’ll also keep it conscience and stick to common marketing terminology so the non-techy people who say “iPhone EXCESS” in the audience can understand what’s going on. (IT’S A ROMAN NUMERAL PEOPLE)
Who Are You? (Awww, You Care!)
My name is Nathan, I work for a company called Smart Phones Shop and I love technology. I’ve been in various roles here over the last 4 years; and now I am their writer/miscellaneous job man.
Why the Pixel is Fantastic Camera
That is achieved with nothing but a single good camera and software. Google realises that software is the future, and that’s an investment that is paying off immensely. A very important point that many people do not understand is that the specifications do not make the phone. I see many people say things like; “But this other phone has more RAM”. While hardware matters, in the smartphone market, software matters just as much. A new phone could have the latest processor, but if it isn’t optimized it won’t run well. A phone could have a fantastic camera, but without software and AI powering the photos, they’ll look average. Megapixels do not make a camera. Google’s 12.2-megapixel camera on the Pixel 3 far outshines other phones with 20+ megapixels.
Screen
No more horrendous screen! If you’re not tech savvy, just know the screens look great, they are on par with Apple and Samsung. No more disgustingly discoloured panels and blue-shifting. Good times for everyone.
New Features
Gonna get straight to the point on this one.

- Top Shot (chooses the best frame of a photo for you!)
- Group Selfies (wide-angle lens option means B I G selfies)
- Digital Well-being (keep track of what you’re doing)
- Brand new custom security chip for…more security
- There’s more, but let’s save some for when I can review the phone.
Carrier Exclusivity
When a device goes to all carriers, that means one company no longer has a strangle hold on the price for the phone. Which means more competition. Which means cheaper phone for you. Everybody wins!
The Less-Than-Fantastic Parts
The Design
Okay this can be a bit subjective, personally I’m not huge on the design, it’s definitely not bad but it’s certainly not the sexy-glass-sandwich of the iPhone X/XS/XS Max or the curved tall beauty of the Galaxy S9. But hey, in terms of things to be not amazing on a phone, you would definitely rather it be this than anything else.
No Facial Scanning
Okay, this is a negative for me. I LOVE facial scanning. But no facial scanning is better than Samsung’s crummy facial scanning.
Is the Phone For You?
Do you want a flagship Android device that works and lasts a long time? If the answer is yes, the Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL is absolutely your only choice.
Are you on a tight budget? If so, while the Pixel is perfectly affordable it is still a premium smartphone. Unless you want an iPhone or you’re on a tight budget, the Pixel is your one and only choice. Take it from a guy that knows what he’s talking about, there’s nothing else that can beat it. Look forward to a full review.
