News about apple just keeps rolling out. I suppose it makes sense, considering it’s been a while since there’s been any drastic changes in the mobile industry as a whole. Well as of two days ago a law was passed stating Apple is required to use micro-USB ports instead of their “lightning chargers”. This probably comes at the release of USB Type-C for a reason, all android smartphones next year will have double sided chargers just as apple does now, by making Apple switch to what everyone else is using, we may finally have a universal charging port by 2017.
Hazzah! No more having to ask my friends for a charger just to find out they only have an iPhone charger. Apple could make a typical apple move and simply supply an adapter with all iPhones sold in Europe (and probably charger an extra $40 to make up for it) It’d be ideal by all means, but with rumors circulating as of 2/12/2015 that Apple may be turning the lightning port into a headphone jack, maybe Apple really has no plans of changing their phone to the universal format?
Last thing we need is to split the market further, but Apple likes being “unique” so with Apple already dividing us all among what charger we use they’d seek to further split us apart with headphone jacks. Apple could swing one of two ways by 2017 and I’m really hoping it’s aligning a little more with their Android brethren. A note to Apple, it’s important to remember that different doesn’t always mean better.
